We have a courtyard that's great for sitting in almost year around. Except for the mosquitos. In the past I've tried the Mosquito Magnet, but I think it ended up costing me about $1 per mosquito with the price of the unit, bait, nets and propane. We had fallen back to using spray on repellents.
The Skeeter Defeater sprays some kind of pyrethrin, which is a insecticide derived from the chrysanthemum, and is one of the least toxic insecticides for mammals. We usually wait 15-20 minutes after a spray cycle before we go into the courtyard. The spray seems to settle fairly quickly, and there's no odor after the 15-20 minute wait.
The unit does a good job of dispersing the spray, and the included remote works from 50+ feet and has a nice locking feature so it can't be inadvertently triggered. Note that the dusk/dawn auto trigger feature works only if the unit is placed in an area with direct sunlight. We ended up setting the unit for manual triggering only--we wanted to place it in a semi-shaded area, and our cats have their own schedule and we want to make sure they're in before we trigger the unit.
The cartridges are basically an aerosol can--you remove the spray button to install it into the dispenser. This means that the cartridges can be used to manually spray areas that are out of range of the dispenser or just need more control. We have some shrubs that I dreaded having to prune or work near because of the mosquito infestation. I'm able to spot spray this area a half hour before I start work and have zero problem with mosquitos.
Highly recommended. We'll probably buy a second unit next spring to get full coverage of the courtyard (the manufacturer says the unit will cover about 300 square feet).
Purchased this recently after reading rave reviews on several sites. I live in the mid-west, and we've suffered one of the worst years of mosquitos this year. After receiving new bites each time I step out the door, I opted to fight back and reclaim my patio.
I've had the Skeeter Defeater out on my patio for a few days now, and really do notice a difference. I can step out with my dog without being bombarded. I had no trouble setting up the device, and it works as described, automatically spraying at dawn and dusk.
