Customer Reviews
First off, I live in the woods of NH, and I've read the success of these machines will vary depending on where you live. I owned the Flowtron MT-275 for 3 yrs. It did work and caught maybe 200 mosquitoes a month. Being my first ever trap I thought this was good. The unit finally stopped working after 3 yrs. I replaced the fan according to their support with no success. Flowtron support was clearly guessing at the problem and I decided to throw this unit out before spending any additional money trying to fix it. What a great move this was Advice to all....throw your Flowtron out if you own one regardless if it is working or not! I recently bought a Mosquito Magnet MM3000 Liberty and a Blue Rhino SV3100 SkeeterVac. One was put on each side of my 3 acres. Within 2 wk both of these units caught more mosquitoes than the Flowtron did in 3 yrs After 3 months now, the Magnet Liberty is by far superior at catching mosquitoes, but that is all it catches, and it does it well! I empty a full bag every wk, which must be 1000's. The SkeeterVac catches about 1/3 the mosquitos of the Magnet, however the TacTrap (sticky paper on the outside of unit) is excellent at catching other biting bugs, like the large black and green flies I have up here. After every 2 wks the TacTrap looks like a fully loaded pizza of bugs...very cool! The other nice thing about the SkeeterVac is that its cordless. However, the TacTrap and Fine Tune Biting (Octanol) will add to the monthly operational cost vs the Magnet. So far, following the advice of previous posters, I have not had any clogging problems. I replace the propane before it runs out so the units are not running on empty...which seems to be the main problem with these units. Bottom line, I like having both the Magnet and SkeeterVac units, and will never by a Flowtron again!
Quick summary: The price was right, setup is easy, and the unit functions great (and is very quiet, which I was wondering about). I'm just not sure yet if it is good enough at removing mosquitos from around our house. But I honestly think I didn't give it enough time (only 6 nights) before the outside party we had. So, I'm going to use it over the winter, but next summer will be the real test (we are in Melbourne, in east central Florida).
Details:
Setup and connection is super easy, except for the 12 volt adapter. The adapter is connected to the unit by a long 12 volt weatherproof wire, and then the adapter male end plugs in to an extension cord (in my case) or a wall outlet. I would recommend that you buy the extra 12 volt wire kit from Flowtron. Just makes it easier, and takes away the need for the orange extension cord crossing the yard (the 12 volt wire and adapter is all waterproof, and could be buried in a shoveled slit trench if needed).
At first, I was upset because this unit (it's their bottom of the line unit) doesn't have a timer or any sort of smart on/off switching. But, then I read the instructions (!) and found that if the unit loses power, and then gets it back, it will automatically reset and start up again by itself. So, the solution is pretty simple: just get a regular exterior timer for the wall outlet or power block and use that as your controller. Right now, I just plug in or unplug the extension cord.
It uses very little propane (I am running it, generally, only at night). I am still on the first tank after three weeks. Hookup is simple, and the stand works great.
And there were plenty of dead mosquitos in the little catcher basket (and a few live ones too, so be careful if you go to empty it!). Again, I may not have given it enough time to suck in all the locals in my yard (we have a one-acre lot covered with palmettos and pines, so this might be a pretty challenging site for the trap). Flowtron says to give it 7-10 days. With cooler weather arriving and the mosquito "threat" typically going down anyway, it's not easy to tell if the Flowtron is super effective or not. But I know it doesn't hurt anything (well, a little greenhouse outgassing) and costs very little to run. So I'm keeping it, and next July, the war is on with the little 6-legged witches! :-)
